Learn the English Language
I have a friend who only speaks the Spanish language. She talks 90 miles per hour. It doesn't matter if you are talking to her on the phone or in person. She seems to think that everyone understands her and she seems very satisfied with the conversation. You leave the interaction just scratching your head wondering what she said. She is trying her best to convey her message to you and she doesn't seem to quite understand that you don't understand what she is saying. I'm sure it is very frustrating for her to not be able to communicate with people. I finally say "Adios" and the conversation is over. She is a very nice person and tries her very best to communicate ... but only in Spanish. She speaks no English.
I have been thinking that I should give her a gift of Pimsleur English for Spanish Speakers Comprehensive I but I am afraid that should would not listen to it. This is the best course I know of for a Spanish speaker to learn English in a short period of time. Since my friend does not know how to read, the Pimsleur course would be perfect for her because it is an all audio course. Pimsleur makes a starter course containing 8 lessons called Pimsleur Quick & Simple. Pimsleur also makes other courses such as Comprehensive I, II & III which give you a total of 90 lessons. When you have completed all 90 lessons you are able to communicate at an intermediate-high level. This would be wonderful for my friend. It would open up a whole new world for her.
Sometimes when I am visiting with my friend I notice that she is off on her own mentally because she does not understand the conversations going on around her. Learning English would unlock new vistas of the country she is living in. She is trying so hard to communicate.
It can be very difficult if you are living in a country or even traveling through a country and you don't speak the language. You can't say what you feel. You can't tell a joke. You can't say the things that you want to say. In short, you can't communicate. If you want any of these things you need an interpreter or you need to learn some of the language. It would be so much nicer to be able to communicate even on a minimal level. You would then be able to say things like, "Where is the bathroom?" "Let's go to a restaurant." "Where do you live?"
